Mid 18th Century Louis XV Buffet a Gibier
Description
Rare and impressive mid 18th century Louis XV gibier, or Buffet de Chasse, École Lyonnaise. This “Buffet a Gibier” is made from figured and richly colored Rhône Valley walnut, retaining its original period limestone top with fossilized inclusions, a deep overhang and soft old surface, 2 deeply molded frame and panel doors carved in restrained asymmetrical rococo relief, opening to a fitted interior with 2 dovetailed cutlery drawers and open shelves for display of faience, carved scalloped apron with star motif, supported by scrolled feet, original hand wrought iron hardware with elaborate spring loaded catch and lock for door with key.
An exceptional example of a rare Lyonnaise form tied to the culture of the hunt and game, or “gibier,” in the pre-Revolutionary era in France.
