Country Landscape by Franz Strahalm (Texas, 1879-1935). Circa 1921. Signed lower right “Frank Horst-Strahalm” and mounted in original carved painted wood frame.
Strahalm is known as a landscape, figure, and portrait painter, muralist, and teacher. He was born in Vienna and immigrated to Mexico City in 1909, then moved to San Antonio in 1911 and founded the San Antonio School of Fine Painting in 1919. He lived afterward in Houston and settled in Dallas in 1921. There he painted for one year under the name Frank Horst. He painted and sketched along the Colorado and Pecos rivers, around Christoval, elsewhere in West Texas, and in the pueblos near Taos and Santa Fe.
